Producing a book on Europe’s system of integration

This year, the Netherlands Institute for Social Research is going to publish a comparative study of the monitoring system of integration in Europe. The study will include 12 to 16 country-specific chapters which for example reflect on the integration context and indicators / data for monitoring in each country. Ramboll Management Consulting has received the unique mission to assist the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality with the writing of the Swedish chapter for the study.
The context of this study comes from "I3 Indicators on Immigrants Integration”, a project conducted in 2005-2006 by an international network of partners from Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal. The project's aim was to contribute to the construction of a common system of indicators to measure the integration of migrants in Europe.

In 2008, Integration and Gender Equality gave Ramboll a project to draw up a proposal on indicators for monitoring the government's seven strategic areas of integration policy. This follow-up was supposed to be used as a basis for the government's continued control of the integration policy. Integration and Gender Equality was very pleased with the outcome of the report and used Ramboll's proposal as a basis for inclusion of the 27 indicators presented in the Budget for 2010.

Because of this project, Ramboll was requested to assist the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality with the development of the Swedish chapter of the book on system of integration in Europe. Ramboll will deliver a completed manuscript of the chapter and the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality will have the right to edit and act as the co-author. The chapter by Ramboll reflects on Sweden's attitude towards monitoring of the national integration policy. The overall objective of Swedish integration policy is equality of rights, obligations and opportunities for all regardless of ethnic and cultural background.

Altogether, 17 countries will help out with the design of this book. The purpose of the book is obtaining a joint idea of what is going on in the area of integration in all European member countries.

Since "I3 Indicators on Immigrants Integration” in 2006 there have been many new efforts to improve the knowledge about immigrants’ integration in society. Furthermore, the enlargement of the European Union has raised new challenges regarding integration.

In this book The Netherlands Institute for Social Research wants to have an updated overview of monitoring systems in the EU member states, the choices that have been made, the data sources that are available and the future directions of member states, so that in time there will be common indicators of integration in Europe.
